What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a branch of sciences that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and instruction in cases of movement dysfunction, body malfunction, physical disorder, disability, healing, and recovery from any neurological disorder and after surgical treatment therapy for early and faster recovery. Where to Start?

Those planning to build a career in Physiotherapy can begin with the Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) course. It is a four-year undergraduate professional course with a curriculum that focuses on physical movement and channelising it to avoid disability and ailments of movement. However,aspirants can also opt for B.Sc in Physiotherapy or Diploma in the same.Physiotherapy is an allied health profession that assists people to maintain, increase or reinstate their physical strength, function, and mobility.

Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPTh)

The duration of the BPTh 4.5 years which includes a mandatory internship of 6 months. The course provides core skills like manual therapy, therapeutic exercise and the application of electro physical modalities. 


To be eligible to pursue a  Bachelor of Physiotherapy is to pass 12th class or equivalent with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks in Biology, Physics, and Chemistry.

Some colleges conduct their own entrance exam like LPUNEST while others accept NEET scores.

B.Sc in Physiotherapy

The duration of the B.Sc in Physiotherapy is 3 years.The course focuses on the fundamentals of physiotherapy studies and to treating patients facing injuries.


To be eligible for B.Sc in Physiotherapy is to pass 10+2 examinations with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as their main subjects from any recognised education board.

There is no entrance exam, admission is done on the basis of merit.

Diploma in Physiotherapy

The duration of the Diploma in Physiotherapy courses varies from 2-3 years. It purely depends on whether the course is UG or PG.


For all UG diploma physiotherapy courses, it is mandatory to pass class 12. Admissions are likely done on the basis of merit.

In order to apply for PG diploma physiotherapy courses, one must have a  graduation degree in the relevant with the minimum percentage required by the respective college you are applying for.

To be eligible for the PG course in Physiotherapy, aspirants must have a degree in BPTh or a related field.

For admission in MPT course, one has to appear it university level or national level entrance exam such as All India Post Graduate Physiotherapy Entrance Test, CET for Master’s courses, JIPMER All India Entrance Exam, etc.

Internship is mandatory

For a PhD in Physiotherapy, one will have to clear entrance exams and interviews
